History & tradition

Ham wraps: traditional; school chaekbo: post-war 20th century

Pinning replaces a knot where a bundle should lie flat or be easy to open. The post-Korean-War schoolchild's 책보 was rolled round books and fastened with a safety pin, then slung over the shoulder (boys) or tied round the waist (girls), until schoolbags took over.

Survives mostly as a memory of school life and in some ham-wrap instructions.

The ham-wrap use is from a single wedding community post; not confirmed by the sources read here.

Researched with medium confidence.
