수국(꽃) 매듭 is a named course item (Yonsei course week 1). A second, knotted version is described in the Daum cafe repost: tie each opposite pair as a bow, then puff the four loops and poke the cloth in with chopsticks; it is said to look best with department-store bojagi.
- 1Lay the cloth as a diamond and centre the box; hold two opposite corners and slide the box to centre it.
- 2Gather the four corners at the centre.
- 3Wind a rubber band 3-4 times around the gathered cloth (use two thin bands together).
- 4Open one corner tail and pleat it with your fingers.
- 5Fold the tail in half and tuck its tip under the rubber band.
- 6Repeat with the other three tails to form a flower.
- 7Open out the pleats to shape the flower.
History & tradition
Modern Korea; named by Lee Hyo-jae, about 2008-2010
One of four knots (hairpin, dumpling, hydrangea, topknot) in a widely reposted guide credited to hanbok designer and wrapping author Lee Hyo-jae, who says she named them 'simply, after their shape' while experimenting. The banded version gathers the corners with rubber bands and folds them into a round flower head; it is a modern decorative wrap, not a historical one. Her guide notes it looks best with stiff department-store wrapping cloth.
A named item in Korean bojagi-wrapping courses and holiday-gift guides.
