History & tradition
Modern Korea (2010s)
Gift vouchers and cash are common Korean holiday and family gifts, and wrapping the envelope in cloth rather than handing it bare follows the older courtesy of wrapping money gifts, as with the 예단 cash envelope at weddings. The flat rolled-and-tucked method shown here appears in lifestyle guides from at least 2014 and is a modern technique.
Included in Seollal and Chuseok wrapping guides alongside box and bottle wraps.
No source gives a history for this wrap; the link to wedding cash wrapping is an analogy, not a documented lineage.
