Korean classes list several flower knots separately (장미 매듭 rose, 동백꽃 camellia, 맨드라미 cockscomb, 카네이션 carnation, 모란꽃 peony; Yonsei curriculum). The sano guide's 꽃매듭 is explicitly shaped 'like a rose bud'. A Seoul workshop (보자기사랑) offers 꽃 매듭 in two finishes, 펴진 (opened) and 넣어진 (tucked).
About 3 times the box size (sano)
- 1Lay the cloth as a diamond and put the box in the centre.
- 2Gather all four corners above the centre of the box.
- 3Bind the gathered cloth tightly with a clear rubber band.
- 4Open each tail above the band slightly outward like a petal.
- 5Roll each tail end inward to add volume.
- 6Shape the whole top so it looks like a rose bud.
History & tradition
Modern Korea, gift-wrapping classes (2000s onward)
Flower knots are a modern family of decorative finishes in which the gathered corners are twisted and tucked into a bloom shape; Korean classes teach several (rose, camellia, peony, carnation). They grew out of the gift-wrapping revival led by hanbok designer Lee Hyo-jae and others from about 2008, whose knots were described as looking like 'dumplings, blooming flowers and topknots'. They are not found in historical sources on bojagi.
Popular for celebration gifts and holiday sets; workshops offer it as a stock finish.
