History & tradition
Joseon wedding and letter etiquette
謹封 'respectfully sealed' was written on the closure of formal documents and wedding papers. In the betrothal the groom's 사주 is folded, wrapped in white paper and put in an envelope marked 근봉 with a band; in the ham, the 사주 and 혼서지 are wrapped in bojagi and banded (the 혼서지 at top, middle and bottom), and gathered fabric bundles may be left untied and simply sealed with 근봉 paper. The band signals that the contents are untouched and offered with respect.
Pre-printed 근봉 bands are standard in wedding-goods shops for modern ham and yedan sets.
