History & tradition
Joseon betrothal rite (사주단자)
In the traditional betrothal, the groom's 사주 envelope is set in a split sorghum or bush-clover stalk, both ends are wound with blue and red thread, first top to bottom, then bottom to top, and the thread is finished with a 동심결. The knot's name, 'one heart', made it the natural seal for a marriage document. Only the 'living' form (생동심결, with corner ears) is used on such celebratory items.
Used today on 사주보 and ham sets sold by wedding shops, and taught as a beginner knot in maedeup classes.
