History & tradition

Joseon to mid-20th century; ordinary households

Even squares were the simplest way to use up cut-offs of similar size, and they suit the most common use of jogakbo, the square table cover (상보). The name is a classification label from a 2005 design study of 90 jogakbo photographs, not a term the makers used. That study counted two square types and kept one for analysis; a later study found about two thirds of surviving pieces are grid-based.

Grid jogakbo are among the most often shown in museums and are the usual first project in bojagi classes.
