History & tradition

Joseon to mid-20th century; ordinary households

Rectangles and squares of different sizes are what scraps of clothing naturally yield, so this mixed layout is the practical norm rather than a planned design. The name is a classification label from a 2005 design study of 90 jogakbo photographs, not a term the makers used. The 2021 study groups it under a broader 'square arrangement' (사각형 배치).

This window-like look is the one most often compared to Mondrian.

Researched with medium confidence.
