History & tradition

Joseon to today

Wedding gift exchanges between the two families centred on silk: the groom's side sent blue and red silk (청단·홍단) in the 함, and gifts went back from the bride's side. Wedding cloths were made richer than everyday ones, with tassels, gold-leaf or gold-paper corners and auspicious characters, because the wrapping showed respect for the recipient.

예단 exchange continues in Korean weddings, and the gifts are still usually presented in silk bojagi.
