History & tradition

Joseon to today

At the 폐백, the bride first bowed to her husband's family and presented food she brought from home, such as jujubes, chestnuts and dried meat. The elders threw jujubes and chestnuts into her skirt, wishing her many children. The dishes were carried in wrapped bundles, usually lined red and blue silk.

The 폐백 is still held after many modern Korean weddings, and the dishes still arrive wrapped in bojagi.

The encykorea 혼례 entry describes the 폐백 but not the cloth itself.

Researched with medium confidence.
