History & tradition
Joseon, palace and well-off households
Padding was added for winter use and to keep covered food warm. Because it needed more cloth and wadding, the padded type is mostly seen among palace and well-off households' cloths. The palace examples have ties sewn in a cross on the face for tying around trays and boxes.
Padded bojagi are rarely made now; surviving palace examples are in the National Palace Museum of Korea.
