History & tradition
Joseon; court records late 19th–early 20th c.
Quilting (누비) was an old Korean technique for warm clothing and was carried over to wrapping cloths, making them stiff and hard-wearing. The court's 보발기 lists record 누비맛보, quilted food covers lined with oiled paper. Close-line quilting took a great deal of time, so quilted bojagi were valued.
Nubi quilting survives as a recognised craft, and quilted cloths are made by nubi specialists rather than as everyday wrappers.
