판보panbo
A panbo is a bojagi with a pattern printed from a carved woodblock, a rare type among surviving cloths.
- Meaning
- 'block wrapper' (판 board or block + 보)
- Made of
- Cotton, ramie
- Era
- late Joseon
Pattern printed with a woodblock (인염). Printed bojagi are rare among surviving Korean textiles and are mostly in black ink.
History & tradition
Late Joseon
Printing a pattern from a carved woodblock let a design be repeated across cloth more cheaply than painting or embroidery. Few printed bojagi survive, and most of those are printed in black ink, so little is known about who made them or for what.
The encykorea entry shows a '오색판화보' image, which suggests multi-colour printed examples also exist.
Researched with low confidence.
