History & tradition
Joseon; palace and households
Oiled paper was a common Joseon material for floor covering and waterproofing, and backing a food cover with it kept grease off the fabric and dust off the food. The court's version is the 맛보: 44 of the 133 surviving Changdeokgung bojagi are paper-backed food covers. Household examples sometimes have cut-paper patterns visible through thin ramie.
