History & tradition

Late Joseon to 20th century

Gold-leaf stamping (금박) was a costly technique of the court and upper class. On bojagi it marked cloths for special occasions, especially weddings, with characters such as 囍 (double happiness) and 多男 (many sons) and paired phoenixes.

The Met says only that its example was 'likely' used for a wedding gift.

Researched with medium confidence.
