History & tradition
Three Kingdoms onward (quilted armour on a Goguryeo tomb mural)
Quilting in close parallel lines gave warmth and strength to clothes and household cloths. Hand quilting declined after machine quilting spread from the 1910s. Quilted food covers (누비맛보) survive from palace use.
누비장 (quilting) was designated National Intangible Heritage in 1996; the late Kim Hae-ja was its master.
The 衲衣 derivation is widely repeated but not in the encyclopedia entry read.
