History & tradition
Korea, traditional; everyday rural practice
Carrying a cloth-wrapped load (보따리) on the head was an everyday way to move goods and food. A ring pad called 똬리 (older form 또애) sat under the load: a straw or rope core finished with sedge, or a ring of coiled straw or cloth, wide enough to rest on the crown. Some had a tail the carrier held with one hand to stop it slipping.
The encyclopedia entry on 똬리 does not say who carried loads; the link to women is from general accounts, and the catalog name is coined.
