Swastika fret

만자문卍字文manjamun

An endless interlocking fret woven into court silks for protection and good luck.

Wishes for
Auspiciousness, protection, endlessness

Allover ground pattern in the satin of palace 패물보 (outer and lining).

History & tradition

Buddhist-derived symbol; common in Joseon patterned silks

The 卍 fret is an endless interlocking pattern read as auspicious and protective. It occurs as an allover woven ground in court satins, as on the red lining of Prince Yeong's consort's jewellery wrapper. Its readings in Joseon were shaped by Neo-Confucian ideas of cosmic origin.

Researched with medium confidence.
