History & tradition

Joseon

The lozenge-shaped chrysanthemum knot was first tied by wrapping the cord twice (hence 두벌감개매듭) and makers extended it to three-, four- and five-wrap versions. It was used across all classes on pouches (귀주머니, 염낭), headdresses (조바위, 족두리), norigae, spoon cases and fans, and its body is the same as that of the chick and butterfly knots.

A favourite centrepiece in modern norigae and wall hangings.
