Official/government wrapping cloth
Gwanbo is a little-documented category for wrapping cloths used by government offices, between palace and household cloths.
- Meaning
- 'official wrapper' (官 government office + 褓 wrapping cloth)
- Made of
- Not documented; presumably cotton, ramie or silk like other bojagi
- Era
- Joseon
A cloth for the use of government offices, named as a third class beside palace and household bojagi. Little of it is recorded. The 관보 among the Changdeokgung textiles is a different word, 棺褓, a coffin cover.
History & tradition
Joseon (term attested in modern classifications)
Some modern accounts add 관보 to 궁보 and 민보 as a third class, for cloths used by government offices, but no detailed description of such office bojagi was found. Note that the palace textile study's '관보' is a different word, 棺褓, a coffin cover; two of those survive among the Changdeokgung cloths.
The existing record's line that 'the palace study also lists a 관보' conflates two words: the Gogung catalogue's 관보 is 棺褓 (coffin cover), not 官褓.
Researched with low confidence.
