Spring, new beginnings

One of the five main bojagi colors. Blue is paired with red in 청홍보, and court 청저포 is recorded.

History & tradition

Five-phase colour theory; Korean use through Three Kingdoms to Joseon

Blue-green stands for the east and wood, and so for spring. In Korean wedding custom it is the groom's colour, set against the bride's red, and the pair turns up on lanterns and wrappers as yin and yang. Bojagi were sorted by colour, and 청보 (blue wrappers) and 아청보 (dark blue) are named categories.

Still a staple of wedding wrapping and of the blue-red pairing in modern ceremonies.
