Purity, sacredness
Undyed or bleached ramie and hemp grounds; white 상침 thread.
History & tradition
Five-phase colour theory; everyday undyed ramie and hemp
White stands for the west and metal and for purity. On bojagi it is mostly the colour of the cloth itself: undyed or bleached ramie (모시) and hemp, the plain household fabrics from which many everyday and patchwork cloths were made.
Translucent white ramie jogakbo is a favourite of contemporary bojagi makers; Hansan ramie weaving is on UNESCO's list.
Researched with medium confidence.
